IV Sedation

What is IV Sedation?

As opposed to general sedation, in which patient is completely unconscious, conscious sedation allows you to remain conscious but places you in a state of deep relaxation.

Patients will be able to talk and communicate with the doctor but will remember nothing of the appointment afterwards. Conscious IV sedation can benefit not only more fearful patients, but also any patient who is having a longer appointment, which some patients find to be stressful.

Benefits of intravenous sedation include:

- Calm, relaxed patient

- Amnesic effect of sedatives so that patient forgets surgical appointment.

- Intravenous delivery of antibiotic agents to decrease post-op likelihood of infection

- Access for the delivery of emergency drugs for the medically compromised patient.
